Usability News is the longest established website for academics, practitioners and organisations working in the area of Human-Computer Interaction, UX and UCD. The site is run by a team of volunteers and is part of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT's Interaction Group.

About us

Founded in 1984, Interaction is the longest-established and largest national group in Europe devoted to Human-Computer Interaction. A specialist group of BCS, The Chartered Institute for IT, Interaction publishes Interfaces, the award-winning quarterly magazine for members and the high-ranking international academic journal Interacting with Computers. The group also organises a prestigious annual international conference (HCI 2012 is hosted by University of Birmingham in July) as well as regular workshops and events.

  • Internet World 2013

    Phoenix UX team has gone to many different events in the past and our latest adventure saw us go to Internet World in London, one of UK's biggest events for online and digital business.
  • Web usability is about the ease of locating| using| and acting upon information on an internet page. In principle| the design of webpages - enterprise or consumer - should allow the end-user to interact intuitively with the website. The perceived complexity of the page is a challenging concept to quantify.
  • Pharmacies step up!

    On 25th March 2013, CVS Pharmacy (the largest pharmacy chain in the United States) has launched an interactive mobile shopping application for iPad. This innovative iPad app lets consumers shop for items, while exploring a virtual 3D CVS store.
  • The next big thing that the tech world is talking about are 'Smart Watches', although Samsung launched the first watch-phone in 1999 sales were poor and it did not take the world by storm, but with the technology we now have at our disposal it begs the question whether smart watches will become a success and possibly replace the smartphone? Or be a failure like it was 14 years ago?
  • 7 February saw Econsultancy and Whatusersdo hold an event that talked about how clients essentially understood the need for User Experience but still didn't include it within their budgets or at least didn't give User Experience enough priority and importance.
  • Foolproof, an experience design agency, has been recognised in The Sunday Times 'Best Small Companies to Work For' 2013, ranking 19th overall, and achieving Top 10 scores for Leadership (90%) and employees feeling proud to work for the company (95%).
  • A recent WhatUsersDo global research survey has found that a majority of brands are knowingly failing their online customers.
  • When I was first introduced into the ‘Improving customer journeys / digital interfaces’ industry back in 2007 the industry was known as User Experience, in mid 2008 to 2009 this changed to ‘Customer Experience’ with now in late 2012 a new ‘buzz word’ was introduced, ‘Customer Driven Innovation’.
  • Foolproof, Europe's largest experience design specialist, has appointed Jonathan Culling as UX Director.

    According to IBM's Black Friday Benchmark Report 2012 (which tracked the online holiday retail sales throughout Thanksgiving and Black Friday), there is no doubt that mobile is the real deal when it comes to shopping. Their data show that mobile sales on Black Friday in US reached 16%, which represents a 63% growth compared to 2011.
