Brief: EU figures for internet access in schools

Source: UN, 13 October 2001

The European Union has released figures for internet connections in schools, based on February and May 2001, revealing that 90% of schools in member states have access.

On average, there are 12 students for each computer in EU schools, while there are 24 students for each internet-enabled computer. Within countries, the range extends between 3-25 students per computer and 3-50 students per online computer. These figures show huge variation from a ratio that makes the internet a regular and available resource to ones that suggest access may be infrequent or at one remove. With another 10% of schools having no access, the EU has expressed concern about the inequalities this could create.
