Brief: Information appliances become complex

Source: UN, 13 October 2001

GISMO, when connected with the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC, uses GSM/GPRS to provide a 4G appliance that functions as mobile phone, pager, laptop/pc, pda etc...

'The GISMO Communicator, due in Britain in November, provides full access to the Web, e-mail, company intranet, telephony and SMS via the GSM/GPRS network and on a location-specific basis via wireless LAN coverage. Connected to a Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC, its manufacturers A Brand New World (ABNW) of Sweden promise that it reduces the number of devices needed for mobile working by offering mobile phone, pager, laptop/pc, and pda in one.

ABNW and Peripheral Corner of England have just agreed to co-operate on the distribution of GISMO in Britain, where take-up of iPAQs leads the way in Europe. 'The Compaq iPAQ has become the world's fastest selling PDA and the standard business tool for most large corporations. The GISMO will enhance all aspects of wireless connectivity, enabling a PDA to connect to GPRS networks and wireless LANs for exchange of information,' said Simon R. France, CEO of Peripheral Corner.

GISMO is due to be launched in the States in the first quarter of 2002. The device will be on sale in Europe for $599 from late November 2001.
